In July 2008, the new BRC Global Standard Issue 5 will be adopted.

All BRC approval audits will be carried out against this standard.

There are a number of significant changes to the standard:

• The standard has increased from 270 clauses to 326.
• There has been the addition of optional unannounced audits
• Enhancement of specific requirements
• Several new sections
• A considerable expansion of the HACCP section
• A change in numbering of all sections

The number of Fundamental Sections remains the same and as before if there is a critical or major non-conformity raised against a Fundamental Section this shall result in non-certification, suspension or withdrawal of certification.

• HACCP
• Quality Management Systems
• Internal Audit
• Corrective Action
• Traceability
• Layout, Product Flow and Segregation
• Housekeeping and Hygiene
• Handling Requirements for Specific Materials
• Control of Operations
• Training
