In July 2008, the BRC Global Standard Issue 5 was adopted. The standard is updated roughly every 3 years.

All BRC approval audits are carried out against this standard until the version is updated

The standard overview is:

• The standard has 326 clauses.
• There are optional unannounced audits
• Several new sections including Senior Management commitment, security
• Version 5 has an expansion of the HACCP section to cover the 12 logical steps

There are a number of Fundamental Sections. Critical or major non-conformity raised against the banner statement of a Fundamental Section results in non-certification, suspension or withdrawal of certification.

• HACCP
• Internal Audit
• Corrective Action
• Traceability
• Layout, Product Flow and Segregation
• Housekeeping and Hygiene
• Handling Requirements for Specific Materials
• Control of Operations
• Training
